Duties & Responsibilities
This Division is responsible for providing highly trained, specialized response services for the Department. This Division is also responsible for maintaining the Emergency Operations Manual. The Special Operations Division is responsible for the following organizational components:
Traffic Section- This Section provides the Department with specialized traffic control capabilities. This Section also provides enforcement coverage for the NJPAC and Newark Bears Stadium as well as coverage for special events. The Section is responsible for the following components:
Motorcycle Unit– This Section is responsible for escorts and traffic enforcement Citywide.
Mounted Unit– This Section provides highly visible patrol in all areas of the City with special emphasis in the Downtown area. The Squad is responsible for special events and represents the Department at ceremonial events such as parades and exhibitions.
Arena Security Unit- This Section is primarily responsible for providing security and traffic services at events at the Prudential Center Arena, as well as the NJPAC, Symphony Hall, and Riverfront Stadium.
Bicycle Unit- This unit is responsible for patrols of neighborhoods based on crime trends. It also works special events to patrol areas that are inaccessible by motorized units.
Downtown Task Force- This unit operates primarily in and around the downtown area and is responsible for patrols, traffic control functions, and essential police services to the City of Newark’s main business thoroughfare.
Emergency Services Unit- This Section provides specialized equipment and services to the Department. Part of the Section consists of a specially trained tactical team which is deployed for high- risk incidents including barricaded persons, armed individuals, and other tactical incidents. The Section also provides bomb technicians for explosive ordnance investigations and disposal.
Aviation Unit- This Unit provides helicopter patrols over the City and aids officers by providing surveillance during events and searches.
Marine Unit- This Unit enables the Department to patrol and conduct search and rescue operations in and around the waterways surrounding the City.
